Lead Base Paint Renovation

Houses built before 1978 could have lead base paint present. All lead base paint was not to be used or sold after 1978. The actual law came into effect in the late 60’s, giving the paint companies 10 years to get rid of their inventory. Most companies stopped making it immediately, but used the time to empty warehouses and store shelves. The closer to 1978 your house was built, the less likely there is lead base paint present.

It is the dust from the paint that is posing the problems. Children under the age of 6 are most at risk. Lead exposure can harm young children and babies even before they are born. It can cause nervous system and kidney damage, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and decreased intelligence, speech, and language, even behavior problems. It can decrease muscle and bone growth, and cause hearing damage as well as poor muscle coordination. Children’s blood lead levels tend to increase rapidly from 6 to 12 months of age, and tend to peak at 18 to 24 months of age. A simple blood test can detect lead and make sure your child is safe.Read more
